Hector 3 and Sunflower
by Robyn Drake

The Emerald Art Center presents
"Untamed and Indomitable", an exhibition of
recent works by California-based painter Robyn Drake.
Drake’s paintings move fluidly from expressive seascapes to vibrant florals, poetic still life’s, moody nudes and figures, and symbolic portraits of animals. Her Andalusian horse, Patrón,
and her raven, Hector, both serve as muses and recurring subjects—symbols of freedom
and loyalty. Each canvas is built with attention to mathematical structures as scaffolding for emotional dynamism.
Based in Half Moon Bay, California, Drake brings a lifetime of technical skill and lived experience to her practice. A seasoned equestrian and professional saddler, she balances
a dual life as artist and horsewoman, traveling frequently to Portugal and Santa Fe, NM,
in pursuit of both creative projects and equestrian pursuits.
Raised on a farm in Iowa, Drake credits her upbringing for shaping her approach.
“Life there was unforgiving, and in that way, it shaped me to walk this path—
untamed, indomitable, determined, and high-risk tolerant.”
Her work is known for its luminous surfaces, strong color harmonies,
and a deep engagement with symbolism and emotional realism.
Drake will also lead an alla prima floral painting
workshop on Friday, September 26, from 12:00–4:00 PM.
This 4-hour session introduces participants to alla prima (“wet-on-wet”) oil painting,
with a focus on floral composition. Emphasis will be placed on gesture, value structure, and simplified forms. Students may also experiment with an optional oil-and-wax emulsion medium developed by the artist for added surface texture and clarity.
Cost: $50 for EAC Members / $60 for Non-Members
All levels are welcome. Space is limited to 12 participants.
Also showing are Featured EAC Members:
Don and Meredith Ferrell with "Together in Art".
Don Ferrell never starts a Pointillism piece with anything in mind, except the wonder of what will happen as he proceeds. As the dots of color appear, at some point, they start showing a trend or path. He follows that direction until a different new avenue is made aware. Following this is the meditation, and the way is shown for him to go.
Merideth Ferrell is pleased to show her acrylic paintings this month, as they are not viewed as often as her watercolors and silk paintings. When she paints with acrylics she is filled with the intensity of their rich colors. Unlike other mediums, they convey the excitement of the colors she sees, both outdoors and in her mind."

With: "Memories of My Homeland III" an Embroidery Exhibition.
These embroideries share the stories of Latin American women from the Eugene and Springfield communities in Oregon. Each stitch reflects memories, traditions, and the colors of everyday life. The exhibition also highlights the work of our special guests: visual artist Maricela Figueroa Zamilpa—whose embroidery appears on the poster—and artisan Fabiola Marroquín, who brings the beauty of ancestral craft into the present.
Jessica Zapata led the coordination of this annual project, with the support of Rose Oakman, Educator for Community Engagement and Well-being at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. This initiative has been organized by Eugene Arte Latino and Comunidad y Herencia Cultural, in collaboration with the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and the Emerald Art Center.
