Barbara Stevens-NewcombMy art work comes from a mix of paint, paper and canvas, as well as visual relationships from nature that at an early age imprinted on my mind. I grew up in the rural, rolling hills of Waukesha County, Wisconsin, lived as a teen in Mexico and Argentina, and went to college and graduate school in Oregon and Oklahoma. I have been a watercolorist since childhood, influenced most by the landscape of Wisconsin, by original Van Gogh paintings I visited as a child at the Art Institute of Chicago, and then later by the colorists Georgia O’Keeffe and Vassily Kandinksy. My work has evolved from detailed drawings of people and landscapes to a richer expression of what is true and unique to the self. My art is the result of listening to and following the landscapes and people inside of myself, inside all of us. I have been painting and drawing since I realized my true calling as an artist, at the age of seven.. My work has been exhibited on both coasts and in the midwest. Through the oral tradition I also spin images and movement, color and change. For my storytelling recording, <em>The Daughters of Ishi-shini, </em>I received a national award from the American Library Association.
