Sandi Grubbs

Sandi and her husband Dan have made their home in Eugene, Oregon, for about 30 years. During this time period, they have also had many overseas stints in Thailand, Hong Kong, and China.  They have three grown children and several grandchildren.

Sandi's interest in Chinese brush painting was sparked nearly 20 years ago when she took a painting class while they were living in Hong Kong. This style of watercolor painting seemed to grab her and she took to it passionately. Returning to Eugene, she was able to continue studying with a local Chinese brush artist, Kathy Hoy, as well as taking workshops from other Chinese artists as they were available.

Seven years ago, she again had the opportunity to go overseas, this time to China.  She studied with two well-known artists, one in the northeast city of Shenyang, Dr. Zhang U. He, and another artist in Shanghai, Mr. Chai Zu-Shun.  While in Shenyang, Sandi had an opportunity to hold an art exhibition at Shenyang Institute of Technology, where she sold many pieces.  A film documentary, broadcast nationally in China, was also made during this time frame by CCTV.

In 2006, Sandi completed a painting workshop with 13 other artists from the United States who joined with her to study with two master artists in the city of Juing Yin. This, too, was a great opportunity to expand her knowledge and painting technique.

In 2008, she held her last exhibition in China before returning to Eugene that May.  It was a huge success, and a lot of funds were raised to benefit homeless people in Shanghai.

Sandi has tried and enjoyed all aspects of Chinese painting, including landscapes, birds, flowers, and animals, both in the spontaneous style and in the fine line detail painting.  Both styles are challenging and enjoyable, and keep her painting every day.
